Pincourt resident Millennium Scholarship recipient
Many high school graduates ready to move onto higher education next year may worry about the cost of funding their post secondary education. But Marissa Morgan-Cavallaro of Pincourt recently received a financial boost when learning that she is a Canadian Millennium Scholarship recipient. The Beaconsfield High School student won the scholarship in large part thanks to a host of volunteer activities and academic achievements. A gifted musician, Morgan-Cavallaro played lead trumpet in her school's concert and stage bands and was chosen to participate in the Quebec Honour Band Program
this year and last. The two-day intensive workshop brought together dedicatedplayers from across the province and offered students the chance to challenge themselves musically while meeting other teens who - share a passion for music.
In addition Morgan-Cavallaro, a member of many school sports teams, was one of 16 players chosen to represent the Pincourt - Soccer Club in the World Association of Non-Governmental Organization's 2007 inaugural soccer project, Play Soccer Make Peace.
The event uses sport to communicate messages about fair play and peaceful resolution. Morgan-Cavallaro and her team mates were so inspired by their participation in the event that they convinced Pincourt officials to host the 2008 edition. Morgan-Cavallaro says that her involvement in the sports program, as well as her participation this year in a humanitarian grad trip to Uruguay to work with special needs children on a farm were her most meaningful volunteer contributions to date. On another note, the teen also took a stand as a student leader while working as a "proud role model" for Changes and Choices, an educational initiative that teaches the teenagers the importance of safe sex practices. Admitting that the project was one of her biggest leadership challenges, Morgan-Cavallaro was assigned to wqrk with a group of 14 year-old boys. To her surprise, she says she was able to earn their respect and attention long enough to discuss how safe sex practices would impact their lives in a positive manner. The Canada Millennium Scholarship Foundation is a private organization that was created by an Act of Parliament in 1998. To date the foundation has distributed more than $2.2 billion, in bursaries, awards and scholarships throughout Canada.
